One injured at weekly Bilin demo 13.11.09 by haitham al katib

Marking the fifth anniversary of Abu Ammar (Yasser Arafat) martyrdom and solidarity with Mohammed Baraka
One injured and dozens suffered tear gas inhalation at the weekly demonstration in Bilin
Friday, 13 \ 11 \ 2009

Directly after the Friday prayers, Bilin citizens gathered in a large demonstration, in response to a call from the Poplar Committee Against the Wall. They were joined by international and Israeli activists, as well as a group of members and supporters of the Democratic Front for Peace and Equality (Hadash) and a delegation of members of the Palestinian People's Party. The protest was led by Mohammed Baraka - the front's general secretary and member of the Israeli Knesset. One international activist was injured and dozens suffered tear gas inhalation at the weekly demonstration in Bilin.

The demonstrators have raised dozens of Palestinian flags and pictures of the late martyr Abu Ammar, along with banners marking the fifth year of his martyrdom, emphasizing their loyalty to his soul. Other banners expressed solidarity with Mohammed Baraka, who will stand on trial in front of an Israeli court next week as a result of his participation in one of the Bilin weekly demonstration in 2005. Mr. Baraka expressed his commitment to participating in the popular demonstrations against the Wall, settlements and occupation, and his determination to participate regardless of the decision of the court. In his words, even if the judge ruled to imprison him for his activities connected to defending the Palestinian land and nation, it would be an honor to serve his sentence.

Demonstrators wore t-shirts with a slogan commemorating the twentieth anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall - From Berlin to Bilin, The Wall Shall Fall - to emphasize the destruction of the Wall in Bilin and the whole Palestine was inevitable, similarly to what happened in Berlin 20 years ago. They also chanted slogans against the Wall, showing their determination to continue in their resistance, which has started almost five years ago, until the wall built on their land falls.

Speeches were held by members of the Popular Committee, members of Knesset, activists from Israeli group Shministim and members of Irak Veterans against the War from the United States. Then the demonstrators marched towards the Wall. Straight after they reached the Wall, the army declared the area a closed military zone, and, within seconds after the announcement, started shooting tear gas. At the beginning the army was throwing individual tear gas canisters at the crowd, however, after some demonstrators attempted to hang banners and Palestinian flags on the barrier, they started using a machine that shoots around 30 tear gas bombs at a time. Dozens suffered severe tear gas inhalation, including Mohammed Baraka, and one international activist, Kyle (32) from the United States was injured after he was trying to escape from the tear gas. His injury, bleeding from his head, required hospital treatment and a number of stitches.

Palestinians are marking five years since the death of former president Yasser Arafat.

Hundreds of people attended a vigil on Tuesday in the main square of the West Bank city of Ramallah, where Arafat is buried.

But such commemorations were banned in Hamas-controlled Gaza - where some activists from Arafat's Fatah party were arrested for holding rallies.

Nour Odeh reports on Arafat's enduring influence among Palestinians.

By late 2003, Yasser Arafat, the iconic Palestinian leader, had been effectively imprisoned in his Ramallah compound for almost a year. To Sherine Salama, an Australian journalist, this represented a challenge and she set herself the task of making a definitive documentary about the Palestinian leader - but it would not prove easy. It took her over a year of filming in and around Yasser Arafat's compound before she finally managed to persuade Arafat's aides to arrange an interview. It would be the last interview Arafat ever gave. A month later he was dead. The Last Days of Yasser Arafat tells the final chapter in the story of one of the most controversial public figures of recent times.

Al-Quds Educational Television is a small, public service, non-profit channel based in Ramallah, which gives Palestinians the chance to show their own stories, to their own communities.
It is under constant threat of financial ruin, Israeli repression and falling foul of the Palestinain factions it criticises.
This film meets some of the characters both on and behind the screens at the station, and explores the stories they want to tell the world about life in the West Bank.

Israel keeps up Palestinian evictions

The United Nations, the United States and the European Union have all called on Israel to stop the illegal eviction of Palestinians and the demolition of their homes.

Ban Ki-moon, the UN secretary-general, urged Israel to end its "provocative actions" in East Jerusalem, while calling for it to freeze all settlement activity in the occupied West Bank.

Despite that, the sight of Palestinians in East Jerusalem being forced out of their homes has become an all too familiar scene.

Clashes ignite over al-Aqsa mosque
