Marwan Barghouthi to Nelson Mandela: "Our freedom seems possible because you reached yours"

During the long years of my own struggle, I had the occasion to think many times of you, dear Nelson Mandela. Even more since my arrest in 2002. I think of a man who spent 27 years in a prison cell, only to demonstrate that freedom was within him before becoming a reality his people could enjoy. I think of his capacity to defy oppression and apartheid, but also to defy hatred and to choose justice over vengeance.

How many times did you doubt the outcome of this struggle? How many times did you ask yourself if justice will prevail? How many times did you wonder why is the world so silent? How many times did you wonder whether your enemy could ever become your partner? At the end, your will proved unbreakable making your name one of the most shining names of freedom.

You are much more than an inspiration. You must have known, the day you came out of prison, that you were not only writing history, but contributing to the triumph of light over darkness, and yet you remained humble. And you carried a promise far beyond the limits of your countries' borders, a promise that oppression and injustice will be vanquished, paving the way to freedom and peace. In my prison cell, I remind myself daily of this quest, and all sacrifices become bearable by the sole prospect that one day the Palestinian people will also be able to enjoy freedom, return and independence, and this land will finally enjoy peace.

You became an icon to allow your cause to shine and to impose itself on the international stage. Universality to counter isolation. You became a symbol around which all those who believe in the universal values that found your struggle could rally, mobilise and act. Unity is the law of victory for oppressed people. The tiny cell and the hours of forced labor, the solitude and the darkness, did not prevent you from seeing the horizon and sharing your vision. Your country has become a lighthouse and we, as Palestinians, are setting sails to reach its shores.

You said “We know too well that our freedom is incomplete without the freedom of the Palestinians”. And from within my prison cell, I tell you our freedom seems possible because you reached yours. Apartheid did not prevail in South Africa, and Apartheid shall not prevail in Palestine. We had the great privilege to welcome in Palestine a few months ago, your comrade and companion in struggle Ahmed Kathrada, who launched, following this visit, the International Campaign for the freedom of Palestinian prisoners from your own cell, where an important part of universal history was shaped, demonstrating that the ties between our struggles are everlasting.

Your capacity to be a unifying figure, and to lead from within the prisoncell, and to be entrusted with the future of your people while being deprived of your ability to choose your own, are the marks of a great and exceptional leader and of a truly historical figure. I salute the freedom fighter and the peace negotiator and maker, the military commander and the inspirer of peaceful resistance, the relentless militant and the statesman.

You have dedicated your life to ensure freedom and dignity, justice and reconciliation, peace and coexistence can prevail. Many now honour your struggle in their speeches. In Palestine, we promise to pursue the quest for our common values, and to honour your struggle not only through words, but by dedicating our lives to the same goals. Freedom dear Madiba, shall prevail, and you contributed tremendously in making this belief a certainty. Rest in Peace, and may God bless your unconquerable soul.

CAMPAIGN LAUNCH: FREE MARWAN BARGHOUTI AND ALL PALESTINIAN POLITICAL PRISONERS

This Sunday, 27 October, the international "Free Marwan Barghouthi and all Palestinian prisoners" campaign will be launched from the historic South African landmark of Robben Island, where anti-apartheid struggle icons Nelson Mandela, Govan Mbeki, Walter Sisulu, Ahmed Kathrada and others were imprisoned during Apartheid in South Africa.

The Palestinian based Popular Campaign for the Release of Marwan Barghouti and all Palestinian Political Prisoners and the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation are the primary organisers of the Robben Island launch event. Ahmed Kathrada launched the "Free Nelson Mandela and all South African Political Prisoners" campaign in 1962, just prior to his own arrest and subsequent imprisonment with Nelson Mandela and others on Robben Island (click here for a short video by actor Morgan Freeman on the life and legacy of Ahmed Kathrada: www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7c_Kg2hp5c). Now half a century later, the 84-year-old anti-apartheid struggle veteran, is launching yet another campaign for an iconic freedom fighter, Marwan Barghouti, commonly dubbed "Palestine's Mandela" (www.bdssouthafrica.com/2011/10/freeing-palestines-mandela-marwan.html). Barghouti is one of the most prominent --of over 5000-- Palestinian political prisoners currently detained in Israeli prisons and jails.

On Sunday, from Robben Island, BDS South Africa will also be announcing and detailing an upcoming South African boycott campaign against G4S Security, the international security company contracted in 2007 to equip and service Israeli prisons, torture centres and detention facilities where Marwan Barghouti and other Palestinian political detainees are held (www.whoprofits.org/company/g4s-israel-hashmira).

Following Sunday's Robben Island launch, public events will be held in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg.

MARWAN BARGHOUTI hat seine Meinung geäußert. Nach langem Schweigen sandte er eine Botschaft aus dem Gefängnis.

Für israelische Ohren klingt diese Botschaft nicht angenehm. Aber für die Palästinenser und für die Araber im Allgemeinen ist sie logisch.

Seine Botschaft könnte nun das neue Programm der palästinensischen Befreiungsbewegung
werden.

Er ruft zu einer 3. Intifada auf, einem gewaltlosen Massenaufstand im Geist des arabischen Frühlings.

Sein Manifest ist eine klare Ablehnung der Politik von Mahmoud Abbas, der eine eingeschränkte, aber sehr bedeutende Zusammenarbeit mit den israelischen Besatzungs-behörden pflegt. Marwan ruft zu einem völligen Bruch aller Arten von Zusammenarbeit auf, sei es auf wirtschaftlichen, militärischen oder anderen Gebieten.

Ein Hauptpunkt dieser Zusammenarbeit ist die tägliche Kollaboration der von Amerikanern ausgebildeten palästinensischen Sicherheitsdienste mit den israelischen Besatzungskräften.
Diese Vereinbarung hat gewalttätige palästinensische Angriffe in den besetzten Gebieten und in Israel selbst wirksam gestoppt. Dies garantiert praktisch die Sicherheit der wachsenden israelischen Siedlungen in der Westbank.

Marwan ruft auch zu einem totalen Boykott Israels, israelischer Institutionen und Produkte in den palästinensischen Gebieten und in aller Welt auf. Die israelischen Produkte sollten in den Läden der Westbank verschwinden, palästinensische Produkte sollten gefördert werden.

Gleichzeitig befürwortet Marwan ein offizielles Ende der Scharlatanerie, die „Friedensverhandlungen“ heißt. Dieser Terminus wird übrigens in Israel nicht mehr gehört. Zunächst wurde er durch „Friedensprozess“ ersetzt, dann durch „politischer Prozess“ und zuletzt durch „politische Sache“. Das einfache Wort „Frieden“ ist unter den Rechten und den meisten Linken zu einem Tabu-Wort geworden. Es ist politisches Gift.

Marwan schlägt vor, das Nicht-Vorhanden-sein von Friedensverhandlungen offiziell zu machen. Keine internationalen Gespräche über die „Wiederbelebung des Friedensprozesses“, kein Herumhasten lächerlicher Leute wie Tony Blair, keine nichtssagenden Ankündigungen von Hillary Clinton und Catherine Ashton, keine leeren Erklärungen des „Quartetts“. Da die israelische Regierung klar die Zwei-Staaten-Lösung aufgegeben hat – falls sie sie wirklich jemals akzeptiert hat – den Vorwand aber aufrecht erhält, fügt diese Heuchelei dem palästinensischen Kampf nur Schaden zu.

Anstelle dieser Heuchelei schlägt Marwan vor, die Schlacht in der UNO zu erneuern. Zunächst noch einmal den Sicherheitsrat anzurufen, um Palästina als einen Mitgliedsstaat anzuerkennen und so die USA herauszufordern, ihr einsames Veto praktisch offen gegen die ganze Welt zu setzen. Nach der erwarteten Zurückweisung des palästinensischen Antrages durch die UN -Vollversammlung als Ergebnis des Veto, wo die große Mehrheit zugunsten Palästinas stimmen würde. Obwohl dies nicht verpflichtend ist, würde dies demonstrieren, dass die Freiheit Palästinas die überwältigende Unterstützung der Familie der Nationen hätte und so Israel (und die USA) sogar noch mehr isolieren würde.

Parallel zu diesem Aktionskurs besteht Marwan auf palästinensischer Einheit und nützt seine beträchtliche moralische Kraft aus, um Fatah und Hamas unter Druck zu setzen.

ZUSAMMENFASSEND hat Marwan Barghouti alle Hoffnung aufgegeben, die palästinen-sische Freiheit durch Zusammenarbeit mit Israel zu erreichen oder selbst mit Israels Oppositionskräften. Die israelische Friedensbewegung wird nicht mehr erwähnt. „Normalisierung“ ist zu einem Schimpfwort geworden.

All diese Ideen sind nicht neu. Aber wenn dies vom palästinensischen Gefangenen Nr. 1 kommt, dem wichtigsten Kandidaten für die Nachfolge von Mahmoud Abbas, dem Helden der palästinensischen Massen, so bedeutet dies ein Wandel zu einem militanteren Kurs, in der Substanz und im Ton.

Er möchte zu einem Stopp des allmählichen und unfreiwilligen Abgleitens der palästinensischen Behörde in eine Vichy-artige Kollaboration aufrufen, während die Ausdehnung des israelischen Siedlungsunternehmens ungestört weitergeht.

ICHT ZUFÄLLIG veröffentlichte Marwan sein Manifest am Vorabend des „Tags des Bodens“, dem weltweiten Tag des Protestes gegen die Besatzung.

Der „Tag des Bodens“ ist der Jahrestag eines Ereignisses, das 1976 als Protest gegen die Entscheidung der israelischen Regierung stattfand, große arabische Ländereien in Galiläa und andern Teilen Israels zu enteignen. Die israelische Armee und Polizei schossen auf die Demonstranten und töteten sechs von ihnen. (Am Tag danach legten zwei meiner Freunde und ich Kränze auf die Gräber der Opfer – eine Handlung, die mir einen Ausbruch von Hass und Diffamierung von israelischer Seite einbrachte, wie ich es selten erfahren habe. )

Der Tag des Bodens war ein Wendepunkt für Israels arabische Bürger, und später wurde es ein Symbol für alle Araber überall. In diesem Jahr drohte die Netanjahu-Regierung, auf jeden zu schießen, der sich nur unsern Grenzen nähert. Es könnte ein Auslöser für die 3. Intifada sein, die von Marwan verlangt wird.

Seit einiger Zeit ist die Welt gegenüber Palästina selbstzufrieden geworden. Alles scheint ruhig. Netanyahu ist es gelungen, die Aufmerksamkeit der Welt von Palästina auf den Iran zu lenken. Aber in diesem Land steht nichts still. Während es so aussieht, als geschähe nichts, wachsen die Siedlungen unaufhörlich. Und so wächst der Groll der Palästinenser, die dies mit eigenen Augen sehen.

Marwan Bargouthis Manifest drückt das beinah einmütige Gefühl der Palästinenser in der Westbank und anderswo aus. Wie Nelson Mandela in der Apartheid Südafrika kann der Mann im Gefängnis bedeutender sein als die Führer außerhalb.

Despite the prisoner exchange deal between Israel and Hamas, thousands of other Palestinians remain in jail. RT talks to the wife of a high-profile prisoner, considered a terrorist by Israel, but a hero by Justinianus.

He is regarded by many as the Palestinian Nelson Mandela. The alleged founder of Fatah's Tanzim armed wing, Marwan Barghouti has been imprisoned in Israel for nearly a decade, serving five life sentences for murdering five Israelis. Over the years, his release has been one of the major stumbling blocks in the Gilad Shalit prisoner exchange deal.

His wife, Fadwa Barghouti, insists the reason that Israelis are releasing other Palestinians with blood on their hands while her husband remains in jail comes down to pure politics.

"His judgment and sentencing in an Israeli court was all political. The Israelis put him in jail because he is the leader of the Palestinian people and the Israelis don't want there to be Palestinian leaders," she told RT. "He is a symbol of unity between Palestinians. The Israelis are afraid to release him because he can bring about reconciliation between Hamas and Fatah."
